Are you loving your pet to death? - News from Yolande
Sometimes it's very difficult to look into those big puppy dog eyes and not give in....sometimes the cat will make friends with you for the first time this week because your tuna sarmie smells divine or your warm chocolate milk is irresistible.....well you could be killing your pets with kindness by breaking the rules.
Keep yourself out of the proverbial "Dog Box" by ensuring that your pet only gets foods that keep them healthy.
Contrary to popular belief, cows milk is not suitable for cats. It often causes an upset tummy as most cats are lactose intolerant. Tinned tuna is another treat that pet parents often give their beloved feline but it's packed with sodium and should not be given as part of the diet.
If you simply must spoil your kitty, try these healthy snacks instead:
Baked carrots, bananas, blueberries, melon, peas, steamed green beans, steamed asparagus and spinach.
TO KEEP THE POOCH SATISFIED...TRY SOME OF THESE GREAT TREATS:
(....dogs are crafty so snack with your dog so he thinks it's a special treat and not a healthy snack)
Carrots: High in fibre and vitamins and they act as a natural toothbrush due to their natural fibres
Celery: Similar to the carrots, scrubbing effect on tartar
Cucumber: A low calorie snack but feed in moderation as it can cause an upset tummy
Peaches and Pears: Always remove pits or stones before serving
Potato: Boiled potato is great for dogs that are prone to tummy upsets. Plain boiled chicken (no skin, no bones) and potato or rice is often recommended by vets as a bland diet to alleviate tummy upsets
Apples: These are packed with vitamin C and A, remove the core and seeds before feeding
Bananas: Rich in potassium, vitamins and copper, they are also a good source of antioxidants to support a healthy immune system. Bananas are sweet so feed in moderation.
Blueberries: Healthy snack and because of their antioxidants they are a great defence against cancer.
No Grapes, raisins, garlic, onion, mushrooms, avocado, rhubarb and most importantly....NO chocolate and NO Xylitol.
GREAT TREATS FOR HIKING BUDDIES:
Sweet potato and carrot chips (baked in the oven for 6-8 minutes)
Sliced strawberries and of course....fresh clean water and a portable doggie bowl.
